That’s how it is with Ian Berry, Co-Founder and Director of The Numbers Game, an accounting and business consultancy firm operating out of Bathurst in New South Wales’ central west. For Ian, an accountant with over thirty years of experience, helping clients grow their businesses delivers daily rewards. Nothing pleases him more than rolling up his sleeves and attacking the root of a problem. Instead of advising a client of what needs to be done, Ian prefers to involve himself in the ongoing solution as well, particularly when it involves complex accounting, operational and forward planning issues.
Ian comes from a corporate background, starting in England where he worked as an Accountant for a Bristol firm and then moved to London to take up a position as an Audit Supervisor for Peat Marwick Mitchell, now known as KPMG. In 1985, he relocated to Australia and continued to work for KPMG, this time as an Audit Manager and Management Consultant. Roles as a Financial Controller and Finance and Admin Manager followed, where Ian was responsible for managing turnovers of over $10 million for companies including Gould & Kennedy Pty Ltd.
In 1993, seeking autonomy from the corporate grind, Ian purchased an Abacus Bookkeeping Centre franchise. The aim was to assist clients by analysing their business performance and delivering accurate and meaningful information that would help them to grow and prosper. Five years down the track, Ian decided to move on in order to establish, with wife Leanne, their current business, The Numbers Game.
Clients of The Numbers Game benefit enormously from Ian’s three decades of experience. He claims to rarely encounter a problem that he hasn’t dealt with before, thus ably sparing clients not just money, but significant agony and uncertainty. Certainly no detached service provider, Ian takes the time to understand a client’s business holistically in order to genuinely assist and support them. He advocates looking forward, not backwards, to identify where a business’s opportunities exist, and focuses on its strengths to achieve maximum traction.
Ian particularly enjoys working with wholesale and distribution businesses that are experiencing inventory and/or planning issues. His ability to think outside the square has provided these clients with solutions that have proven to be sustainable over time, evidence that Ian can be relied upon to deliver far more than a ‘quick fix’ remedy.
Recognition has come in the form of a number of awards and career achievements. Ian was a Finalist in the National Franchisee of the Year Awards in 1994 and Winner of the Queensland Franchise of the Year Award (Service Business) in 1994. The following year, he was a Finalist in the Queensland Franchise of the Year Award (Service Business). Ian served as Treasurer for the SE Brisbane Chamber of Commerce in 1995.
